Pre-Kick-Off Meeting of LIFE GEOCARBON

The Preparatory project LIFE GEOCARBON, co-financed by the European Commission, has started its activities (pre-kick-off meeting: 12 November 2021). The objective of the project is to contribute to the filling of the gap that exists in the calculation of the balance (emissions and removals) of carbon dioxide from agriculture. More specifically, by recording the cultivation practices which farmers apply in the field, it is feasible to calculate the soil organic carbon sequestration and therefore the contribution of agriculture to the mitigation of climate change. The import of this information from the farmers will be done through an internet web-GIS platform, easily available from a mobile phone.

Reducing CO2 emissions has been proposed by the European Commission and the European Parliament as one of the most important pillars of the forthcoming Common Agricultural Policy. The subsidies will be linked to the carbon balance and therefore there is a need for operational tools that can assess farmers' contribution to soil organic carbon sequestration and therefore to mitigating climate change.

The Coordinator of the project is the Institute of Soil and Water Resources of ELGO - DIMITRA and the Project Investigator of the LIFE GEOCARBON project is the Associate Researcher, Dr. Dimitris Triantakonstantis.

The Associated Beneficiaries are: the Institute of Urban Environment and Human Resources of Panteion University, the National Research Council of Italy (Institute of BioEconomy), the Spanish National Research Council (Centro de Edafología y Biología Aplicada del Segura), the University of the Algarve in Portugal and the Agricultural Cooperative Delta Oiniades Etoloakarnania.
